An 8-year-old Pomeranian coughs and coughs at night – congestive heart failure

Wednesday, Apr 6, 2016

I asked the resident from Punggol, North Singapore why he came from a distance to Toa Payoh Vets as most pet owners simply go to the nearest vet clinic down the road. He is a retiree and a taxi driver now competing with Grab Taxi and Uber.

He said that he had sent a pet owner to my Surgery some time ago and had asked the owner about Toa Payoh Vets. With a good feedback he came today.

His dog had been coughing often at night (nocturnal cough) and one year ago, another vet had told him “water got into his dog’s lungs” after an X-ray and so he was given medication for the dog.

Recently the dog was coughing loudly at night. “Go and drink water” his wife said to the dog, but the coughing did not stop. So he consulted me. The dog had congestive cardiac failure and with heart disease medication and no strenuous exercise, will live comfortably at least 2 more years. He was happy with the explanation as it takes time and effort to explain to him what caused the coughing. Delayed treatment will lead to heart failure and death.
